A Little Night Music explores the relationship between Fredrick Eagerman and his old flame, actress Desiree Armfeldt.
Fredrick is a successful lawyer who comes home to his virginal bride Ann and his son, Henrick, who is a year older than his newly acquired wife. After taking Ann to see Desiree in one of her plays, Fredrick spends a night with the actress.
This liaison makes Desiree's lover, Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm insanely jealous. Count Malcolm's wife, Charlotte, hears the details about the previous night and sets out to tell the young Ann about her husbands' infidelity.
Meanwhile, Desiree with intentions of wooing Fredrick decides to invite the lawyer and his family to her mother's estate for "A Weekend in the Country". Charlotte advises Ann not to accept, however later finds herself too, joining the vacation when husband Malcolm decides that he can't loose his mistress to Fredrick.
All the characters converge at Madame Armfeldt's estate where the night sky is bound to smile down on the events that unfold.
