David Williamson's The Club

AN INTERVIEW WITH BARRY MITCHELL

Photo of Barry MitchellBarry Mitchell is directing our forthcoming production, David Williamson's The Club.

We caught up with Barry to find out what The Club is all about.

Fab Nobs: Barry, firstly tell us a bit about yourself.

Barry: I have been involved with Theatre on and off since I was in High School, getting into the senior productions while I was still in my junior years. Then came amateur community theatre, then later I moved to Melbourne to study.

A brief stint in Children’s theatre before moving into a long career in Music. A few years in Radio, then a bit more study and then back into theatre again which over the last fifteen years has seen me perform in quite a number of professional and amateur Operas, Musicals and Straight Plays.

FN: This is not the first time you've worked with Fab Nobs - tell us a bit about your Fab Nobs story.

Barry: My Fab Nobs’ career, although quite short, has been a very pleasant experience. First of all playing Manolo opposite my partner, Sallyanne, in the female version of The Odd Couple (2003) was a lot of fun. Directing Cosi (2005) with the fantastic cast that we assembled was truly a highlight. Finally, I have both fond and not so pleasant memories of Return to the Forbidden Planet (2007), having collapsed and split my head open on the second last night, I spent the final performance in hospital. I missed the party!!

FN: What was it about The Club that appealed to you?

Barry: When I was a young teenager playing at my local country football club, my father was the president and often I would have to stay back after training and wait for my Dad while he was in with the committee picking the Firsts and Reserve side. The petty arguments, sniping and ganging up by these so-called adults was very similar to the arguments, sniping and ganging up in the school yard, so, when I read the script it all came flooding back. When it comes to sport, no matter what level it is played at, common sense takes a back seat to self interest.

FN: What is The Club about?

Barry: The Club, although based on a football club, is about any sporting club, sewing club, card playing club etc that is committee based. Factions are created, Presidents are toppled, new ones are installed and on it goes. Sometimes what goes on in the committee room, although less sporting, is more entertaining than what goes on on the playing field or wherever.  Some Theatre companies are a prime example! Basically put a bunch of people in the one room, all with different agendas, then let the games begin. That’s what The Club is all about!

FN: What do you think of your cast?

Barry: I am very proud of the cast that we gathered for this production. Very experienced and very talented. Each performer brings a special bit of themselves to their role, which makes their character quite hilariously more believable.

FN: And finally, who should come to see the show - only football people?

Barry: Anyone. You don’t have to be interested in football or sport. It’s not about sport. You don’t even have to be interested in theatre.  It’s about the relationships between people who put themselves into or are elected into positions of authority and their battle to hold ground. They are all around us. Come and see it for you are bound to recognise someone.

THE CLUB

The play takes place over a two-hour meeting in a Football Committee room with more twists and turns than a Gary Ablett centre clearance. The meeting starts with the Coach’s head on the chopping block. This quickly changes to the Presidents head, then the Captain and the star recruit.

In the end the only thing to come through unscathed is the love of the game and the passion for ‘The Club’
